Apple Inc. (AAPL:NSD) Looks to tap Watch for Diabetics

Apple Watch for Blood Sugar Readings

Apple Inc. has a project known as E5, which aims to provide non-invasive and continuous glucose monitoring for diabetics without needing to prick the skin for blood. The technology uses silicon photonics chip technology and a process called optical absorption spectroscopy, which involves using lasers to emit specific wavelengths of light into an area below the skin. The interstitial fluid absorbs the light, and the reflected light indicates the concentration of glucose. An algorithm then determines a person’s blood glucose level. The company has been testing the technology on hundreds of people for over a decade, and it is now considered to be in the proof-of-concept stage. Apple’s goal is to create a preventative measure to warn people if they’re prediabetic, enabling them to make lifestyle changes to avoid developing type 2 diabetes. The company has already held early discussions with regulatory bodies about getting approval for the system. Despite being a very speculative project, Apple executives believe they are uniquely positioned to crack the problem. The company’s expertise in hardware and software integration, along with its deep pockets, means that hundreds of engineers are working on the project as part of Apple’s Exploratory Design Group. The ultimate goal is to add the monitoring system to the Apple Watch, which would make the device an essential item for millions of diabetics worldwide.
